Mountain Landscape in Snow. Ink on paper, mounted as hanging scroll. Inscription and signature by the artist: “Copying ‘Evening Snow at the Fishing Shore’ (Yu ding mu xue) by Fan Zhongli (Fan Kuan, ca. 960-1030). … Beilou Jin Cheng from Wuxing.” Two seals of the artist: „Gongbo”, “Seal of Jin Cheng” (Jin Cheng zhi yin).
German private collection. Formerly from an American private collection - Jin Chen, style name Gongbo, was from Wuxing in Zhejiang province. He studied Law in London in 1902 and became an Assessor at the Court of Justice in China as well as secretary at the state council. After 1911 he founded the Hu She Painting Society in Peking and in 1920 the Chinese Painting Research Society together with Chen Hengke. 1921 and 1924 he visited Japan. He promoted the study of Song and Yuan painting and became the leader of traditionalist painting in Peking. He also established the exhibition of the Palace Museum and copied many works of old masters he could see there.
